KwaZulu-Natal is a verdant and green province, which forms the east coast of South Africa from Port Edward northwards to the Mozambique boundary, and is aptly called South Africa’s garden province.

It is a province with a subtropical coastline, sweeping savannah in the east and the magnificent Drakensberg mountain range in the west. The warm Indian Ocean washing its beaches makes it one of the country’s most popular holiday destinations.

KwaZulu-Natal is the only province with a monarchy specifically provided for in the Constitution. Ulundi is the traditional capital of the Zulu monarchy.

The subtropical coastline of KwaZulu-Natal has some of South Africa’s best-protected indigenous coastal forests, for example, at Dukuduku and Kosi Bay. It is also along this coast that the magnificent St Lucia Estuary and Kosi Bay lakes are located. Separating KwaZulu- Natal from the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, the Drakensberg runs 200 km along the western boundary of the province. The northern part of the province, south of the Swaziland border, is typical African savannah providing a natural backdrop for its rich wildlife.

Less than 50km from the towering Amphitheatre of Royal Natal, this ideally-situated agricultural and trading centre was laid out in 1897 by a retired sea captain. British forces built a blockhouse in the settlement two years later at the onset of the Anglo-Boer War - that building is now a Monument and Museum within the grounds of the local Court House.

MIDLANDS MEANDER -
Dargle is situated on the Midlands Meander - see below.

BATTLEFIELDS -
Nestling in a valley of the Biggarsberg mountains, Dundee was originally a farm owned by Peter Smith, who in 1882 named it after his Scottish hometown. Surrounded by evocatively-titled peaks - Indumeni (Where the thunder rolls), Mpati (Place of good waters) and Talana (Shelf for precious items) rich coal deposits attracted merchants and fortune hunters. Smith floated the Dundee Coal Company on the London Stock Exchange in 1899, and Dundee soon emerged as a boomtown graced with stately homes and the first theatre north of Port Natal-Durban. Pioneer traders from the Indian sub- continent settled here during the following decade, when Dundee became the meeting place of seven roads into the hinterland and coast of Africa. It remains a convenient central base for exploration of this corner of KwaZulu-Natal.

  • Recognised by the ancient mystics of our land as breathing new life into the human spirit, the inescapable allure of this 200- kilometre- long wonderland owes much to its intense relationship with people...the million-plus years of Stone Age occupation in particular. This culminated in the tragic disappearance, during the late 19th century, of the San hunter-gatherers colloquially referred to as Bushmen. Migrating chiefdoms from the Great Lakes of Central Africa had in the 13th century been humbled by the sheer magnitude of this uKhahlamba - Barrier of Spears - destined to become the western extreme of their Zulu Kingdom. The ox-wagons of Boer settlers negotiated its precipitous passes in 1837 on the Great Trek from British dominion in the Cape Colony to a 'Promised Land'. The name Drakensberg was coined forty years later when a Boer father and son reported seeing a dragon - a giant lizard with wings and a tail - flying high above the cloud-shrouded mountain peaks. The inscription in late 2000 of uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park as a World Heritage Site brought long-overdue recognition of its universal value to mankind. Meeting the criteria for both Natural and Cultural listings, the site can now officially boast 'superlative natural phenomena and beauty, unique richness of biological diversity, the conservation of all- important endemic and threatened species plus masterpieces of human creative genius in the form of 35 000 'San rock art images'. Many people have known this for a long time! From the massive basalt cliffs of its northern reaches to the soaring sandstone buttresses in the south, the Berg - as it's popularly known - offers a myriad delights to anyone of any age who needs to 'get away from it all'. Peace and quiet is the catchphrase amid this unsurpassed grandeur where the world's second- highest waterfall tumbles down a series of breathtaking cascades.

  • ZULULAND -
150 km north of Durban. The oldest town in Zululand and situated around the Dlinza indigenous forest, Eshowe derives its name from the tranquil, whispering breezes blowing through the trees. On a plateau protected from the sub-tropical humidity affecting surrounding areas, it was for centuries a popular 'holiday destination' for successive Zulu kings. The Norwegian missionary-settlers established the KwaMondi Mission in 1860, around which Fort Eshowe was built and where the force of Colonel Pearston was besieged for 10 weeks in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Eshowe was in 1887 proclaimed a magistracy and capital - when Britain annexed Zululand.

  • BATTLEFIELDS
Ladysmith on the banks of the Klip River - proclaimed in 1850 - was named after the Spanish wife of Sir Harry Smith. It became a prosperous staging- post for fortune-hunters en route to the Transvaal gold-fields and diamond discoveries at Kimberley. Elandslaagte is 30 km from Ladysmith.

Ladysmith made world headlines at the turn of the century when it was besieged for 118 days during the most crucial stage of the Anglo-Boer War. Today a commercial centre for surrounding communities, the town is a natural gateway to the tourist delights of the Central and Northern reaches of the Drakensberg range. Snowcapped peaks during winter form a breathtaking backdrop.

See Ladysmith listing below or Dundee above

Kloof enjoys the cooler climate experienced at the top of Field's Hill and has easy access to the M13. Pinetown is only 10 minutes away, and Durban 25 minutes, thus the area ideal for the person on business in Durban who does not want to stay in town. Kloof is a convenient base from which to explore the attractions of the Valley of 1000 Hills, or the Midlands Meander or Durban and the beaches. There are shopping centres in Kloof and Hillcrest . The area also has many quality pubs and restaurants. There are two top golf courses at the Kloof Country Club and Cotswold Downs .

  • The Kosi Bay Nature Reserve lies on the coast in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal and surrounds the unique and beautiful Kosi Bay lake system which is part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. This system consists of four lakes and a series of inter connecting channels which eventually drain via a sandy estuary into the Indian ocean. It is home to a large variety of birds and animals including hippos and crocs. Humpback whales can be seen off the beaches on their northerly migration to calve in Mozambique and in December and January loggerhead and leatherback turtles come onto the beaches to lay their eggs in carefully prepared nests. Proclaimed in 1950 and extended in 1984. This is the most pristine lake system on the South African Coast. Kosi Bay Camp is situated on the western shore of Lake Nhlange, the largest in the Kosi system. To access the Kosi mouth and the Indian Ocean beaches is a 45 minute drive requiring a 4X4 vehicle. The drive is spectacular with views across the fish kraal dotted lake to the sea as you crest the huge coastal dunes. The condition of the last 7 kilometres of the Kosi Bay Camp entrance road is very sandy and requires a 4X4 vehicle or one with a difflock. As most of the 'roads' in the area are sand tracks, a 4X4 is required to fully access all the areas of the park.

The Greater Margate area includes the following former villages on the South Coast of Kwazulu Natal: Shelley Beach, St Michaels-on-Sea, Uvongo, Ramsgate The land surveyor involved obviously hankered after the holidays of his youth at the bustling seaside resort in Kent...for in 1921 very little was happening in this Margate when he changed its name from Inkongweni. The land had been purchased by Hugh Balance, who recognised its tourist potential, but could persuade only one fellow- investor to share his dream. Publicity was needed, and in 1922 millions of newspaper readers around the globe suddenly 'discovered' Margate when Balance wrote to the world s press about the beached remains of a 'mammoth', hairy and bloodless monster he had witnessed being killed by two whales in a titanic struggle just beyond the breakers. A spring tide removed the evidence before a flurry of scientific enquiry could descend on the town and quite possibly ruin the author's credibility.

  • The Midlands Meander was launched in 1985 when five crafters came up with the inspired concept of encouraging people to visit their studios, rather than seeing their work in distant art galleries and shops. Today there are 178 Midlands Meander Association Members and a network of signposted roads that link their outlets across the Midlands countryisde. Although the mix of Members has greatly diversified, the initial emphasis on quality handcrafted products remains. The Midlands Meander is the country's leading arts and crafts route, with a fun and fascinating mix of shops and galleries, historical and environmental sites and tours, and numerous sporting and leisure activies. Accommodation options are diverse in both variety and style, while eateries and restaurants in the area offer a range of options from hearty country fare to unique gourmet delights.

Having crossed over the Drakensberg range into Zulu territory on their Great Trek from British dominion in the Cape Colony, Boer settlers earmarked this site as their capital-to-be, and in 1838 laid the foundation of a neat grid of streets and lanes. Rival British expansionists were a safe distance away at Port Natal- Durban...and the surrounding tribes were predominantly 'scatterlings' - the result of King Shaka's empire-building exploits - who posed no threat. It was from this fledgeling settlement that Pieter Retief embarked on his ill-fated journey to negotiate for land with Shaka's co- assassin and heir, King Dingane. The Boer leader's 'martyrdom' gave Pietermaritzburg the first half of its name - Gert Maritz being the head of a second wave of Voortrekkers. Within five years of establishing the town, however, the Boers succumbed to British military might and vacated the area...leaving their carefully-laid foundations to be stamped with a world-renowned legacy of Edwardian and Victorian architecture. Pietermaritzburg remained capital of Natal province until the arrival of our non-racial democracy and the emergence of KwaZulu-Natal, where it shares its status with Ulundi, in the heart of traditional Zululand.

  • The Southernmost of the South Coast resorts, this village is set is luxuriant subtropical forest and fronted by an expansive protected beach.

  • Situated on KwaZulu-Natal's fertile south coast, Richards Bay started out as a holiday town and has developed into a major port. It is situated on a lagoon in the Mhathuze river and its potential as a great natural harbour was confirmed in 1897 after a detailed survey was carried out. Originally, the lagoon provided a home for a vast population of aquatic birds, attracted to the area by a rich supply of fish. Crocodiles, sharks and hippos frequented the lagoon, as did hunters and fisherman in search of trophies. The area of sheltered water was twice that of Durban’s harbour. The mouth was open to the sea and the depth, though only three meters, could be dredged to allow passage for very large vessels. When development started, conservationists objected and in 1935 the 1 200 hectare lagoon was declared a game reserve, whilst in 1945 the adjacent land was declared Richards Bay Park. The town of Richards Bay was laid out alongside this park, on the elevated northern slope of the lagoon, overlooking a fine stretch of water. Today Richards Bay is a thriving industrial port with a direct rail connection to the mines for coal and other mining exports.

Former President Nelson Mandela had the following to say about this unique area; "The St. Lucia Wetland Park must be the only place on the globe where the world's oldest land mammal (the rhinoceros) and the world's biggest terrestrial mammal (the elephant) share an ecosystem with the world's oldest fish (the coelacanth) and the world's biggest marine mammal (the whale)".
Three hundred kilometres north of Durban Airport and eighty kilometres from the Richards Bay airport, between Lake St. Lucia - an ecological wonder - and the warm Indian Ocean, lies the picturesque village of St. Lucia.
Isimangaliso Wetland Park, (previously known as The Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park) is a World Heritage Site. A Pristine beach, Forest walking trails and Crocodile Research Centre are located near the village and other activities include horse riding, two scenic nine hole golf courses just around the corner, Kayaking amongst the Hippos and Crocodiles, Snorkelling at Cape Vidal, Guided boat tours on Lake St. Lucia, Zulu culture, Deep Sea Fishing, Seasonal boat based Whale watching (June to November) and -Turtle watching (November to March). Only an hour's drive away is the oldest formally proclaimed conservation area in Africa, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Game Reserve, hosting the Big Five, There is also a globally important bird area (IBA).

It is here that East meets West with a very interesting and dynamic confluence of diverse cultures which is proudly South African. Tongaat is home to some of the oldest and architecturally marvellous Temples. The first ever sugar mill is to be found in Tongaat. The first ship that arrived in S.A. with cane growers from India, settled in Tongaat. Ten minutes from the centre of Durban, Umhlanga, Glenashley and La Lucia on the magnificent Sugar Coast extracts the essence of 'East meets West in the Zulu Kingdom'. Sweeping golden sands and picture- postcard coves that epitomize luxurious and laid- back Beach lifestyle...enclaves of Bush where bird and small animal-life is abundant. Traditional Zulu culture naturally abounds, but the Sugar Coast is also steeped in 'settler history', and an important Battlefields site lies an easy drive north. Eons ago part of a coastal dune forest, its wild animals were first pursued by the Stone Age, San hunter- gatherers, who sought the pleasures of incredibly mild winters away from their icy mountain caves. They were displaced by the so-called Lala people of the Iron Age...and our fascinating Shell Midden is a fragile, precious asset that bears witness to Umhlanga's long history as popular meeting place. Its name derives from the Nguni-language tribes destined to become the proud Zulu nation, who called this favourite seaside playground 'The Place of Reeds'. Rivers ran clear and full, pastures were perennially verdant, and while tending to their herds and flocks...the daily sight of frolicking dolphins provided everlasting amusement. Which is exactly how the first colonial settlers found it...and how it remains to this day! Deep-sea whale-watching and game- fishing adventures also lie in store. The O'Conner Promenade ends where the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve Trail begins. Come sundowner time, Umhlanga comes alive with the sounds of fine dining, music and assorted revelry. Stylish restaurants, funky taverns and chic nightclubs dot the resort's Mediterranean- style layout. Sunny skies, warm Indian Ocean waves, beautiful beaches, tantalising cuisine, pristine nature, captivating culture, vibrant nightlife, shopping extravaganzas - all await you in Umhlanga.

  • Vryheid in northern KwaZulu Natal and is the heartbeat of a vast regional area. Situated 1176 metres above sea level it has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade in summer and 12 degrees centigrade in winter. Vryheid lies in the Battlefields Route as centre for Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer battlefields. Vryheid was established in 1884 as the capital of a short-lived Nieuwe Republiek of mercenaries. After the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879 the Zulu kingdom was divided into 13 petty states in attempt to crush the Zulu power. Cetshwayo received only a small portion of his original state. He died in 1884 and his heir, Dinuzulu, hired mercenaries to fight the neighbouring Chief Zibebu of the Mandlakazi for more property. The mercenaries defeated Zibebu and claimed their reward. However, far more seem to have claimed - 800 claimants - than were really fighting and Dinuzulu's area was too small for that number of subdivisions. Eventually, with British intervention, land was granted in the northern part of the country. The capital Vryheid was established on this land. In 1887 this Nieuwe Republiek was incorporated in the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, and after the Anglo-Boer War it became part of Natal. It became a municipality in 1912. It serves the large community of maize, wheat and beef farmers.

    DARGLE

Dargle is situated on the Midlands Meander. The Midlands Meander was launched in 1985 when five crafters came up with the inspired concept of encouraging people to visit their studios, rather than seeing their work in distant art galleries and shops.

INVERSANDA, PETRUS STROOM ROAD, DARGLE REF B1079
Self catering self contained farmhouse wing. Can sleep 4/6 people.

    GENERAL SITUATION
Inversanda is a country lover’s haven situated in the beautiful Dargle valley in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, just 20 minutes from Midmar Dam. Inversanda is in the the privileged position of being situated right at the end of the road; a place to relax and soak up the peace and tranquility.
Visitors have truly arrived once they head off down the 2.5km driveway and see the Inhlosane mountain amphitheatre unfold in front of them, with the farm nestling in its footsteps. This is a very special valley - a jewel that can be treasured. Children, horses and well behaved pets are very welcome.
Visitors can enjoy wonderful walks which can be tailored to suit those wanting to stroll along the river to others who want to burn serious calories. The river is also wonderful for picnics and swimming in summer.
Birding - In 2002 four ornithological students from Cornell University stayed at the farm for 4 months researching for a Phd thesis. Whilst here they compiled a bird list of over 185 different species which provides a challenge for even the keenest birder!
Horse riding - There is no better way to explore the farm than in a saddle. The horses are all highly schooled and only small groups of experienced riders are taken out. Alternatively your own horses can be treated to a holiday in the country and let them enjoy the wonderful rides. There is nothing more exhilarating than being treated to glorious views as the horses pound up the mountainside. For beginners fortunately there is also riding close by.
Mountain biking - Cyclists are welcomed and appear to get enormous pleasure heading up and down steep gradients! On the one hand there are routes that will satisfy the appetites of the seriously competitive and for those who simply want a scenic, less demanding ride, following the river is an attractive alternative.Trout fishing - Over 2.5kms of the Umgeni River meanders along one of the Inversanda boundaries. Every year the river is stocked and fishermen are welcome to cast their lines in the winter months. When the river is too high, dam fishing is available locally.
Nearby attractions - The attractions of the Midlands Meander need no introduction. The Meander offers something for everyone ranging from its arts and crafts to home-brewed beer and freshly baked muffins. Nearby attractions include:· Midmar Dam,· Nelson Mandela Capture Site,· Howick Falls,· Karkloof Canopy Tours, Corrie Lynn Handcrafted Furniture
    ACCOMMODATION

    PIETERMARITZBURG/HILTON

    MARGATE

The Greater Margate area includes the following former villages: Shelley Beach, St Michaels-on-Sea, Uvongo, Ramsgate The land surveyor involved obviously hankered after the holidays of his youth at the bustling seaside resort in Kent...for in 1921 very little was happening in this Margate when he changed its name from Inkongweni.

    UMHLANGA/LA LUCIA/GLENASHLEY/UMDLOTI

Ten minutes from the centre of Durban, Umhlanga and La Lucia on the magnificent Sugar Coast extracts the essence of 'East meets West in the Zulu Kingdom' .

    DRAKENSBERG

Recognised by the ancient mystics of our land as breathing new life into the human spirit, the inescapable allure of this 200- kilometre- long wonderland owes much to its intense relationship with people...the million-plus years of Stone Age occupation in particular.

    AMPHITHEATRE LODGE AND BACKPACKERS
    POCOLANE NATURE RESERVE, OLIVIERSHOEK,
    NORTHERN DRAKENSBERG
    REF R945
Backpackers, Camping, Caravans, Self Catering and B&B.
Upper lodge can sleep 30 persons.
Lower Lodge can sleep 30 persons. Children welcome.

    GENERAL SITUATION
Amphitheatre Backpackers consists of two sections. With both sections The hostel's namesake "The Amphitheatre" stretches across the horizon.
    THE UPPER LODGE
This section consists of a century old stone cottage, perched high on a cliff. There are hikes straight out of the back door that take you to our very own cave paintings and to the top of Pocolane Peak. There is an Internet cafe, shop, home cooked vegetarian and meat dishes (cooked from fresh veggies and herbs from the garden,) as well as a bar (made from bottles) for cocktails and cold drafts.
The upper lodge is situated on the middle section of Royal Natal National Park with the bottom of the park being accessed by turning left out of the Lodge gate and the top section being accessed by travelling right out of the Lodge gate. Go swimming in the reservoir or Sterkfontein Dam. On chilly nights enjoy cosy log fires, with a pint of porter to keep you warm.
    THE LOWER LODGE
This section is found nearer the foot of the Amphitheatre. The lodge has a swimming pool, independent self-catering chalets, restaurant (with a variety of tasty dishes to choose from each night) and a thatched cocktail bar. The lower lodge is close to the bottom section of Royal Natal National Park with a picture postcard view of the Amphitheatre from the lawn. For those wishing to explore Cathedral Peak for the day the Lodge is very well placed.
    ACTIVITIES
(Prices of tours and activities on Application)
    HIKING OPTIONS:
TUGELA FALLS/ MONT AUX SOURCES/ SENTINEL HIKE
This trip has many different names. It is the most famous hike in South Africa as it takes one to the highest waterfalls in Africa (the second highest in the world!!). It is not particularly difficult, but really spectacular.
The trip starts at Amphitheatre Backpackers Upper Lodge at 7:30 am. Those leaving from the Lower Lodge are shuttled up in the morning. (No extra Cost.)
Guests are driven around the spectacular Sterkfontein Dam, through Qwa Qwa and up the side of the Amphitheatre via Witsieshoek Pass. If one decided to walk from the bottom (Mahai campsite) to the top then it would take about 3-4 days to get there and back again. This is why we cheat and travel the extra distance to the base of the Sentinel where we walk to the top and back in one day (the perfect hike for impatient people!) We then set off around the massive Sentinel Peak, up the kloof gulley and to the top of the Amphitheatre (over 3000 metres up) and the top of the Drakensberg. From here you get your first view of the Devil's Tooth and the 1 km drop down the Amphitheatre Wall into the bottom section of Royal Natal. Off we tramp across the escarpment and along the Tugela River where folk can dip in the rock pools. Here you can stand a chance of catching a glimpse of the elusive and famous Bearded Vulture. To your right is the highest point, Mont Aux Sources, (and the source of 4 of our major rivers.) Then it's on to the lip of the Amphitheatre to watch the highest waterfall in Africa (2nd highest in the world) as it drops 1 km down the Basalt Cliffs. Here we have lunch, explore the plateau and then off back to the car with knee-tingling chain ladders on your descent. The trip goes whenever we have customers who wish to take the trip.
SHUTTLE TO ROYAL NATAL BOTTOM PARK.
We take people to the lower park every morning and fetch them in the afternoon.
    OVERNIGHT HIKING.
If you wish to do overnight hiking this cfan be organised for you. There are great hiking trails across the escarpment towards Cathedral, Champagne and even as far as Sani! Be prepared.
    LESOTHO
This day trip is very special as no other tourists ever travel to the area that we visit. We take you over Monantso Pass (a rugged pass on the side of the Amphitheatre) and into Lesotho. This mountain Kingdom is still as it was hundreds of years ago. The secret of the area that we visit is that it is not featured in any of the travel books and so it remains completely "untouristy." The day begins from Amphitheatre Backpacker's Upper Lodge at 7:30am. Those leaving from the Lower Lodge are shuttled up in the morning. (No extra Cost.) The bus travels around Sterkfontein Dam and through Qwa Qwa, a town that has an interesting mix of both Sotho and Zulu people. It was also one of South Africa's first "homelands" during apartheid. It takes about 60 minutes to arrive at the South African border post. Visitors must ensure that they have a "multiple re-entry" visa into South Africa in order to be allowed back across this border on their way back. The day is spent hiking to San cave paintings, visiting sangomas (witchdoctors,) tasting Sotho food and beer, playing sport if there's a match on, visiting a local school and basically taking part in anything that is happening in the area at the time . A percentage of the money received from visitors is used to buy books etc. for a local school. This is an extremely popular trip and highly recommended. This trip includes guide fees, food, transport, donation to the school, Sotho food and beer.
    CYCLING.
There are also a number of mountain bike routes that take you past various points of historical and geographical interest. These include cycling with zebra, wildebeest and other game, visiting the vulture feeding site (where you have the opportunity of spotting the elusive Bearded Vulture) and going off road to the cave where the first settlers signed their initials in the 1800's The mountain bikes are kept in good condition in order to ensure you are able to take in the beautiful surrounds! We also provide maps that we have personally designed for the trails, which highlight the different sites. You can choose whether to travel on or off the tar roads.
    HORSERIDING.
Spend a day enjoying top quality horse riding with a conservation ranger. The rides are extremely popular. This is at the bottom of the Amphitheatre. Get there by taking our daily shuttle there and back or driving in your own car. The shortest ride is an hour and the longest six hours.
    FISHING.
We have a fly-fishing guide who knows these waters like the back of his hand There are numerous dams in the area that are stocked as well as wild trout in the rivers, but one of the most famous aspects of this area is that Sterkfontein Dam (which we are next to) besides being the longest and deepest of South Africa's dams is also the dam with the largest variety of indigenous fish which includes Yellowfish that are far better fighters than trout or bass! For those who prefer spin fishing we have rods and spinners available for catching Bluegill, Yellowtail, Bass, Catfish and numerous other fresh water varieties.
    WINDSURFING.
In the area is the longest dam in South Africa (Sterkfontein Dam) with a beautiful view of the Drakensberg around its perimeter. The dam can be accessed by hiking, cycling or getting a lift there. We also rent out windsurfers to those interested.
    ABSEILING / RAPP JUMPING/ROCK CLIMBING
Abseiling and Rapp jumping activities both involve descending down a cliff face with the aid of harnesses and ropes.

    RICHARDS BAY

Situated on KwaZulu-Natal's fertile south coast, Richards Bay started out as a holiday town and has developed into a major port.

    KOSI BAY

The Kosi Bay Nature Reserve lies on the coast in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal and surrounds the unique and beautiful Kosi Bay lake system which is part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. The condition of the last 7kilometres of the Kosi Bay Camp entrance road is very sandy and requires a 4X4 vehicle or one with a difflock. As most of the 'roads' in the area are sand tracks, a 4X4 is required to fully access all the areas of the park.
